Yaz, also known as Yasmin, is the common name for the birth control drug called drospirenone. Since the drug was first released in 2001 by Bayer, it has been the source of a large amount of legal and medical controversy.

When a pharmaceutical company releases a new drug, it is expected by the consumer that they have done everything that they can to ensure that the drug is as safe as possible and that the pharmaceutical company is forthcoming in presenting all the potential risks related to the drug. It is also expected that the advertising will accurately represent the uses for that drug. In the case of the drug Yaz and related products, there is sufficient evidence to indicate that Bayer, the drug’s manufacturer did not behave responsibly in regards to those expectations.

In 2006, Bayer launched a campaign for the drug Yaz, a birth control pill containing the drug drospirenone. Similar products, Yasmin, a lower dosage version of the drug, and Ocella, the generic version, were also released. The campaign was a huge success and Yaz rapidly became one of the most popular drugs in the US.

In marketing the drug drospirenone under the brand names Yas, Yasmin, and Ocella, the advertisements lead the consumer to believe as well as a contraception, that they could also be used to treat all forms of PMS and acne. In actuality, the drug was only approved by the FDA for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and cases of moderate acne. Bayer has also been charged with misleading the public in regards to the health risks of the drug, minimizing the risk of blood clots and other heart issues, as well as creating commercials that distracted the consumer and took attention away from the part that disclosed the health risks.

The FDA files a warning against Bayer in 2009. Bayer began to run modified advertisements in an attempt to clear up the previously misleading advertisements. But in 2010, lawsuits were filed in Canada claiming that there is a connection between drospirenone-based contraceptives and an increase in blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes. The FDA then launched a series of studies to determine the potential health risks of Yaz and its related family of drugs. In 2011, the FDA determined that the labeling of Yaz and Yasmin was inadequate and they ordered that the black label be updated to include information about the potential risks. Despite the potential dangers of the drug, however, they decided that there still were potential benefits and that the drug should remain on the market. However, there have been some studies that indicate that the newest generation of Yaz-related drugs is no safer than the prior ones and that there are safer alternatives on the market.

Yaz Lawyer

Yaz Lawyer WomanIf you have suffered from side effects from taking Yaz, you may want to talk with an experienced Yaz Lawyer to see if you have are entitled to compensation.  While there are some serious health risks associated with Yaz, the FDA has decided that in most cases, the benefits of the drug outweigh those risks and that the drug should stay on the market.  However, there are many (including the FDA) who feel that the warning labels for Yaz were misleading or played down some of the potential risks.  As a result, several Yaz lawsuits have been filed claiming that Bayer, the manufacturers of Yaz, intentionally mislead consumers by neglecting to fully disclose all of the harmful risks in their labeling and marketing of the drug or that Bayer failed to adequately test Yaz before putting it on the market. Currently, all Yaz litigation has been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation in Illinois.

If you have suffered from any of the Yaz side effects, particularly if you have suffered from Blood Clots as a result of taking Yaz, you may be entitled to compensation.  First and foremost, you will want to talk to a medical professional to make sure that you aware of all your options.  But, you will also want to speak with an experienced Yaz attorney to make sure that you protect all your legal rights.  A good lawyer will make sure that you document your situation accurately so that, should you choose to file a claim, you will have sufficient evidence to create a strong case.  This will help to ensure that you get all the compensation you are due, if you were harmed by taking the drug.
